How to Plan Your Yearly Goals

In this article, I want to help you fill out the Goals For the Year page that comes with each planner. The objective of this page is to come up with specific goals rather than vague goals. So for example, a good yearly goal would be “workout two times a week” rather than just “lose weight.”

The yearly goals spread is divided into eight categories: personal goals, spiritual goals, physical goals, household goals, financial goals, social goals, marital goals, and generosity goals. Each category also has two boxes to fill in, what you need to avoid and what you need to do to achieve the goals.

You can fill this page out by writing down as many goals as you can think of and then picking one that is your priority and filling out the “I need to avoid” and “I need to do” boxes for just that goal, or you can fill out the boxes for all the goals.

Let’s start by going through all the categories and coming up with some ideas for goals in those categories.

Personal Goals:

  • Learn a Chopin sonata on the piano

  • Read twelve books this year

  • Move from B1 to B2 in German

  • Take a painting class

Spiritual Goals:

  • Say a Rosary every day

  • Go to Mass twice a week

  • Fast on all Fridays during Lent

  • Meditate 15 minutes a day

Physical Goals:

  • Run a 5k race

  • Learn three new hairstyles

  • Go on a walk every morning

  • Eat breakfast every morning

Household Goals:

  • Meal Plan each week

  • Clean out medicine closet

  • Plant a garden

  • Clean one room a day

Financial Goals:

  • Pay an extra $200/month towards the mortgage

  • Save $2000 for a vacation

  • Start cash budgeting

Social Goals:

  • Host two parties this year

  • Hang out with friends after Mass

  • RSVP to invites right away

Marital Goals

  • Look presentable when husband comes home

  • Be cheerful even when tired

  • Pray for husband every day

  • Write husband a note each week

Generosity Goals:

  • Text siblings on their birthday

  • Donate $500/month to parish

  • Make meals for new mothers five times

After you come up with your goals, you can fill out the boxes that go with them. For example, for the goal “Read twelve books this year,” you could write “I need to avoid picking up my phone when bored” and “I need to put a book next to my rocking chair.”

I hope this helps you fill our your goals for the year page!
